I love Risk. And now I'm helping bring the game to facebook. On this video, all I did was the zombie hand at the very end...the coolest part right? I've worked on a few different facebook games in the past. But this is by far the best. It will be a lot like Risk but with some new twists. You can play as different factions. We're going to start with the Human and Zombie factions, and then continue adding more. Each faction will have different special weapons that change your strategy and playing style. And the best part...you can play against your friends.

Valentines 2011

This is the cheezy valentine I made for my wife this year. She was in Minnesota at the time because her Grandma died, and was complaining about the bitter cold. The Lake effect makes Minnesota colder than most of Canada and Alaska. Not sure why people live there. Shoveling tunnels to your car in the winter, and breathing mosquitoes mixed with some air in the summer. From my observation of the place, they have a strange fascination to fish, and have to live as close as possible to them. That and ice hockey, without which we couldn't keep the mullet alive.

So...I made her this nice tropical Valentine to cheer her up. It was a success:)

So here's the Roman cavalry...seemed like it should be female. I've been playing lego Indiana Jones with my four year old, and the girls can jump higher and are faster than the boys. Seems like it's that way in a lot of movies and games these days.

For those who don't know, I've been working for Ubisoft for a while now. A few people have asked to see some of the stuff I've been doing, so I asked if I could show off a few things. The attached images are a few different layout/concept art for a Star Bucks game they were thinking about making. I like doing quick rough stuff like this; it always feels like it has more personality at this stage.

Here are a few of the finished golf courses I did for Candesa. I finished these some time ago but never got around to posting them. I kept thinking I would figure out how to add SWF files to a blog, and show them with all their animation too. But I've been so busy with other work I haven't gotten around to it. Hopefully, when I get some time, I'll finally get my website set up, and I'll add a lot more of my animated work. There's not a lot of animation on these, but if you want...imagine things like moving water, cool lightning bolts hitting the green, things like that. All the backgrounds were created in Flash, which does limit what you can do artistically, but I love it.

Found this on Youtube and am excited to post it. This is a video game a number of BYU animators worked on while working with Wyatt over at Flash Potatoes. We were responsible for doing all the animations for the game. Growing up I liked playing mystery games like Kings Quest, Space Quest. Those ones were my favorite. I never thought I'd get to work on one though. Hopefully there will be more games like this one down the road.

It also won a gold award on Game Tunnel. So congrats to everyone who worked on it. And a special hand to Wyatt for finding and leading us in this project.

Here is a short commercial me and a couple friends from FLash Potatoes did for the Doritos Competition. This was all Wyatts ingenious idea, and it was a heck of a lot of fun, and a good break from the regular stuff we do. I was responsible for all of the animation, and design of the gorilla, and all of the abstract backgrounds.

This guy is a concept work for a video game being produced by a group of students at UVSU I believe. Jasone Kyser asked me if I wanted to do some stuff for them, and it sounded like fun. They are creating a game with all different kinds of creatures. They wanted to have some Egypt ion anamorphic characters but not the traditional ones. Instead of doing a jackal, I was told to pick some other kind of dog.
This bottom one is just to show you how angry my laptop makes me. The bottom one is how it looked when I transferred the image from my laptop to a desktop. I had to do color corrections to get it to look right again. Laptops are a little darker than a desktop, but whats up with the the drastic color differences too. I used to think it was just my laptop, but I went to Best Buy a couple weeks ago and they let me load some of my images on to different laptops---They're all like this; that is, if they are a PC. Those who own a Mac laptop, you made the right choice. The makers of the Mac made their colors match up with the average desktop. So those people who say PC's are better than Macs may be right when they are talking about desktops, but a Laptops, no way. The Most expensive, nicest PC laptop had messed up colors. So if your an artist, and color is important to you, don't make the mistake I did And if you can afford it. Unfortunately Macs are more expensive. I am going to try and get a color correction done on my laptop, and hopefully that will help.

Of course there will be cowboys in the future. We still have tons of em today. Based on my own statistical analysis, most cowboys today don't ride horses, they ride really big trucks. They still wear tight pants and a cowboy hat. Tight pants because Those old trucks with big lifts and bad shocks get bumpy off roads. They wear the hat because it looks cool. I'll admit it, I want to wear a cowboy hat. If I did I would wear it a bit sideways like John Wayne. And John Wayne was a real man; he just slapped girls around and kissed them whenever he wanted and they still liked him. Man, I wish it was like that today. But times have changed. Women used to want a guy that was strong and new how to sling a gun to protect her honor. Nowadays they just sling lawyers at you. Tough cowboys are not needed anymore. So "where have all the cowboys gone"--Mexico I think.

These were done as a class assignment in school. For this one, the dialogue was given to me by the instructor, and then it was up to me to do the rest. These are the kind of boards you would do for a saturday morning cartoon. The storyboards for these are pretty much how the cartoon will be laid out, requiring them to be drawn with more detail.

I was always tearing up and down the street racing cars, pretending like I had all kinds of cool James Bond gadgets, and visiting all the old single people who would give me candy when I came over (the neighborhood I grew up in was mostly newly weds or nearly deads).

This is the last thing I did on Lion and the Mouse. This project has been going since before the program began, a little side animation that students could work on when they needed a break from all the 3D stuff we do. But it is finally finished and the end product looks spectacular. The animation isn’t the best out there, but its rare today that you get to see a fully colored and finished traditional student animation.

This is what happens when I'm board. I was just doodling little pencil drawings on my wacom tablet. Then I started making sketches of my hand. Then I started coloring it, and then rendering it out even more. It started to become more interesting and I found some nifty ways to use some of the photoshop tools. Then there was just this floating hand and thought I should add some sand to it.

Not the kind of stuff I usually do, but it was kind of fun.

This is a project I just finished. Small parts of it are animated in After Effects and all the sound is on a soundtrack that plays along with it. The company wanted this done for a presentation at a buisness meeting as an introduction to their product. It really kept me up night and day as I had other stuff I was working on at the same time, and I only had close to two weeks to complete it. But I couldn't pass it up--I got to draw comics. How cool is that.

In the film there are both low angle close up, medium and distant shots of the rug. Depending on your shading rate and the complexity of the shader, it can be a real challenge to get something to look good close up and from a distance. This is the original model that I was given with a simple texture that I put on it when I began working on it. Later we decided we didn't wan the strings on the side which I cut off using an opacity map instead of having the modeler remodel the rug.

These are some pages from the comic book I am working on. I decided to keep it all in black and white, and go with a loose pen and marker look because of the short amount of time that I have to work on it. But I'm not to disappointed about this, the black and white will add to the drama of the story. I'm trying to keep my lines looking a bit sketchy and messy too; I think it adds a more realistic emotional quality to the story. Also to add to the realism, I have been trying to stay away from typical facial expressions by using reference material, and looking into a mirror. I still want the characters to look cartoony, but I don't want the exaggerated expressions of a typical cartoon character.

I think this image really caught the mood that I was going for. I had originally drawn the face on the monster, but then decided not to show it when I started painting. None of us really know whats going on downstairs, and we all have our own interpretations in our heads; so I decided to leave out a lot of information on the beast, and make a very abstract background to allow people to add in their own details, which I'm sure are way cooler than anything I could ever draw.

And it matches my site—didn't expect that.

My wife and I were trying to come up with names for upcoming child, and I proposed the name William Riker. My wife said that it sounded nice, and thats what we should name him. When she went to work, she works on the geek squad at Best Buy, you can imagine what all the nerds there thought—awesome. She didn't know the name was from Star Trek, but they all informed her. Despite her hatred for Star Trek she still likes the name. So I'm crossing fingers; I really want to nickname one of my kids number one.

I hope he doesn't get beat up in school...

Man I haven't posted anything in like three months. I think thats a record. I've been busy with school, a Flash job and a comic book I've been working on. When I get some of the comic book pages finalized I'll be sure to post a few up.

These are all silhouette drawings. Sometimes we forget to look at the outside shape of our drawings though that can be the most important part. This process forces you to get a good outside shape for your character before going into more detail. I just do these really fast with a brush pen and then pick out the designs I like best before moving on.

After picking one you like, block out different shapes within the silhouette, and add some different values. Keep it rough at this point.

Then you can put it on a light table and draw the geisha of rock.

Samurai vs Ninja

We had a big debate in my gesture drawing class, so big that it ended up being our final project for the class. The debate was who would win in a fight between a Samurai and Ninja. Our drawings will be posted up on the wall this coming fall semester and people will be able to vote for which is better.

Through much research, from reliable sources on the internet, I found that most people prefer Ninja to Samurai. The reason for this, I believe, is the popularization of ninjas in America. When asking this question at work I was astonished to find people that had never even heard of a samurai. They voted ninja because it was familiar to them.

Through those same reliable sources on the internet, I found that samurai are superior to ninja, if you think otherwise please post why you think so. Or you can post reasons why Samurai are better.

This is a background idea for our upcoming kite animation. Clouds are pretty fun to paint and harder than you think. There are not a lot of rules, you get to play around with all kinds of shapes and use your imagination. Those two black things in the middle are kites, by the way.

I thought I should post these now since I never have before. These backgrounds were made for a 2-D limited animation in a class I had last fall semester. The backgrounds were made of all PNG alpha channel layers so that we could move things around for all the different scenes (the rocks, clouds, everything, could be rearranged). I have to give Jed Henry http://jedart.blogspot.com/ a ton of credit for these. He constantly gave me critiques and input to make them look better. Thanks Jed.

I changed the colors a bit and added a few things for the different time frames in the film.
